Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. This reduction in kidney function can lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body, affecting overall health. CKD is classified into five stages, ranging from mild kidney damage (Stage 1) to complete kidney failure (Stage 5). Early detection and intervention are key in managing the disease and preventing further damage.

In the earlier stages of CKD, the focus is on medical management to slow or halt the progression of the disease. This includes blood pressure control, managing blood sugar levels for diabetic patients, and the use of medications to control protein in the urine, reduce inflammation, and protect kidney function. Lifestyle changes, such as following a kidney-friendly diet, quitting smoking, and regular physical activity, are also emphasized to improve kidney health and prevent further complications.

As CKD advances to later stages, kidney function deteriorates, and renal replacement therapy (RRT) becomes necessary to manage the loss of kidney function. This includes dialysis, a process that removes waste and excess fluids from the blood when the kidneys can no longer perform this function effectively. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are the primary forms of dialysis, each offering different benefits based on patient needs and health status.

For patients in the final stage of CKD (Stage 5), kidney transplantation is often recommended as the most definitive treatment option. A renal transplant involves replacing the damaged kidney with a healthy one from a donor, offering patients the possibility of a more normal and active life. However, not all patients are candidates for transplantation, and dialysis may continue to be necessary for some. Throughout the treatment journey, a multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, dietitians, and other specialists provides personalized care to help patients manage the disease and improve their quality of life.
